Visakhapatnam :The groundwater level in the district has dipped considerably due to the deficient southwest monsoon, leading to shortage of water supplied through GVMC tankers in several places in the city. Though GVMC provides with piped water supply, most people depend on borewells.
Since the groundwater level has come down, many borewells have dried up or are not providing sufficient water, forcing people living in houses, apartments and commercial complexes to go in for water tankers.
This problem is witnessed in most places in the city including Gajuwaka, NAD Junction, Gopalapatnam, Simhachalam, Akkayyapalem, MVP Colony, Sagar Nagar and Bheemunipatnam.
Though the district has been badly hit by the deficient monsoon, the phenomenon has also impacted significantly the other districts in the state.
However, the chief minister has asked officials to take urgent steps to address the problem and averted drinking water crisis by arranging for special meetings.
Meanwhile, CM Chandrababu Naidu has asked officials to put in place strategies to address the problems caused by the deficient monsoon and called for strengthening the drinking water supply system and to constantly monitor the water levels in the reservoirs.
Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has directed to formulate water management strategies for optimally utilising the inflow of flood waters into the Krishna basin from the upper catchment areas as a result of the incessant rains.
He asked officials to update him on the situation regarding flood flows in Krishna and Godavari rivers and the water stored in the reservoirs. He also expressed concern over the possible fodder shortage in the state in the days to come as a result of the deficient monsoon and directed to take measures.
