Arundhati stuns defending champ, eyes gold

Commonwealth Games : Arundhati Choudhary produced a superb tactical display to upset defending champion Rosie Eccles 4-0 and storm into the Commonwealth Games final, assuring herself of at least a silver medal.

The Indian weathered Eccles' aggressive start before taking control with cleaner, sharper punches. 

A standing count against the Welsh boxer late in the opening round swung the momentum decisively in Arundhati's favour, with all five judges scoring the round for her. She stayed composed in the second, repeatedly punishing Eccles with crisp counter-punches while the home favourite struggled to land cleanly.

Tempers flared in a physical final round, but Arundhati kept her cool to seal a deserved victory and move within one win of Commonwealth Games gold.

Jaismine Lamboria turned the semifinal into a one-sided contest, producing another dominant round to seal her place in the Commonwealth Games final in emphatic fashion.

Maselela came out aggressively at the start of the second round, throwing quick combinations in a bid to turn the bout around. But Jaismine stayed composed, picking her punches brilliantly and repeatedly landing clean jabs to halt every attack.

As the round progressed, the gap in class became increasingly evident. Maselela resorted to wild swings out of desperation, but the Indian's movement, timing and accuracy left her chasing shadows.

Jaismine then trapped her opponent against the ropes and unleashed a series of crisp punches, forcing the referee to administer a standing count to the Lesotho boxer.

The pressure never relented. Sensing Maselela could no longer defend herself adequately, the referee stepped in and stopped the contest, handing Jaismine victory by RSC (Referee Stops Contest).

Jaismine stormed into the Commonwealth Games final, guaranteeing herself at least a silver medal and moving one win away from gold.
