Rajamahendravaram: An awareness programme on drug abuse, illicit trafficking and the threat posed by narcotics to national security was held at GSKM Law College at Pidimgoyyi under the Bomuru police station limits on Tuesday.
The programme was conducted by District Eagle CI Y Rambabu under the supervision of SB DSP B Ramakrishna.
Law college students were briefed on the legal consequences of possessing, consuming and trafficking narcotic substances, besides the relevant laws and punishments prescribed under them.
The students were also informed about the links between drug trafficking and terrorist, extremist and other illegal networks.
The speakers explained how such networks could pose a threat to national security and have an adverse impact on internal security.
District SP D Narasimha Kishore said the police department was conducting such awareness programmes with the objective of equipping law students, who would become lawyers and legal professionals, to play a meaningful role in preventing drug abuse.
He said law students could help create awareness about the legal consequences of drug-related offences and motivate young people to stay away from narcotics.
