Water conservation drive launched in Tirupati
Tirupati: Under the State government’s ‘Swarnandhra–Swacch Andhra’ and ‘Jaladhara–Jalaharathi’ campaign, district Collector Dr S Venkateswar, along with Chandragiri MLA Pulivarty Nani, visited Peruru Cheruvu on Saturday and launched a 100 day water conservation and groundwater recharge action plan.
Speaking on the occasion, Collector Venkateswar stated that ‘Jaladhara–Jalaharathi’ is a flagship 100 day water security mission of the State government, aimed at strengthening ground water levels and ensuring adequate water availability for agriculture and drinking purposes.
Works under this drive will be taken up in coordination with the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), focusing on tank restoration, desilting, bund protection, and construction of check dams across the district.
Chandragiri MLA Pulivarty Nani highlighted that the programme is being implemented as a pre summer preparedness measure to prevent water stress for farmers and rural communities during the hot season.
He added that the main objective of the 100 day campaign is to protect tanks and ponds, enhance water storage capacity, and invigorate irrigation and drainage societies so that they actively participate in groundwater recharge and sustainable water management.
During the visit, the Collector and the MLA jointly inspected the bund and surrounding areas of Peruru Cheruvu and issued specific instructions to the officers of the Water Resources department regarding bund maintenance, encroachment removal, and preventive maintenance measures.
The district administration has urged farmers, gram sabha members, and irrigation society members to actively participate in the 100 day drive to ensure its success and long term improvement in water security.
